    • Student journalists like Johnthan Shephard of Wayne State University’s South End Newspaper gave us insight into the world of a student journalist. Shephard said that many older adults initially try to dismiss student journalists with the assumption that students are not versed in the current issues. Shepard clarified that student journalists like himself are professionals and use all the journalistic standards, like the AP Stylebook, as well as adhering to SPJ rules and NPPA standards. Shephard said that cutting corners is unacceptable by any journalist, novice or veteran.

In this ever-changing political environment, student groups are seizing opportunities on college campuses across the nation to promote ideologies and viewpoints. The real question is whether they are within the limits of the law. The First Amendment as stipulated protects.

Free Speech the right to assemble and the freedom of religion as well as the freedom of the press. Shephard said that journalism is the neutral voice in the room that wants facts, not fiction.

Sensationalism is not a part of the hard news reporting process. Bloggers, contrary to widespread belief, are not journalists. A lot of writers who call themselves journalists do feature writing at best, slanting facts to their emotional viewpoints and beliefs. These are all the signs of amateurs and not the work of a professional journalist, student, or veteran.
